Rewind to 2023 and I got the cutest little puppy Luna who very quickly became my shadow. I was so excited to finally have my own dog but quickly came the realisation that I had a dog with separation anxiety. She was also reactive and over aroused on walks so I couldn't take her anywhere! Suddenly I was completely trapped in my own home and had no idea how to handle it.

I scoured advice online and I tried it all, but nothing worked! I was overwhelmed, frustrated and felt completely alone. Until I reached out to a specialist who supported me through the process of teaching Luna to be comfortable home alone using Julie Naismith's methods.

We have been through it - the highs, the lows and everything in between. The physical challenges, the emotional turmoil and the complete overwhelm of living with a dog with separation anxiety. But this inspired me to go onto complete formal training to become a Certified Dog Trainer and a Separation Anxiety Specialist so I could understand my own dog and use both my academic knowledge and my personal experience to help others.

I also understand how overwhelming and discouraging behavioural challenges can feel because I've faced these with Luna! When we first started out, Luna was reactive on walks, easily over-aroused, overstimulated, and unable to listen or learn outside. Her behaviour was embarrassing at times, and despite attending classes and seeking help from local trainers, we made little to no progress. It was frustrating and disheartening.

Everything changed when I began learning deeply about dog behaviour and how dogs actually learn. Suddenly, Luna made sense to me. I understood her needs, her emotions, and the reasons behind her reactions. From there, our real progress began.

Since then, we’ve worked on loose-lead walking, recall, reactivity, confidence building and most importantly, our relationship. I’ve learned firsthand that the relationship you have with your dog comes before anything else. It’s the foundation for all behaviour change and the key to making lasting progress.
